Snowy Winter Surprise Proposal at Ravenwood Castle with Owl

KP & Sam's Magical Winter Surprise Proposal

Magic was in the air at Ravenwood Castle when Sam pulled off a breathtaking surprise proposal for KP. Despite the 15-degree weather and a crunchy layer of snow, the plan went off without a hitch on the castle drawbridge.

I Usually Don't Photograph at Private Lodges, and Ravenwood is the Exception

I was hidden away by my car, hands freezing because I’d ditched my mittens to ensure I didn’t miss the shot, waiting for them to make their way to the pub for lunch. Because of my long history photographing weddings at the castle, the innkeepers graciously waived their “no random professional photography” rule, and I made sure to thank them with a few baby plants as gifts.

A Real-Life Owl at a Real-Life Castle

The couple arrived a few minutes late, but they had the most magical excuse: a rufous morph Eastern Screech-Owl had landed right by their cottage, sunning itself on a handrail. After we headed inside to warm up and finish their session, I went to check on the little visitor.

The owl was so calm he actually let me pet his chest feathers! While the staff and I were concerned enough to call a wildlife officer, Sam later messaged me with the best news: the owl had flown off on its own.

An Omen for New Beginnings

Sam took the owl’s timing as a powerful omen, and honestly, it’s hard to disagree. In many traditions, owls represent prosperity, mystery, and transformation—a fitting tribute to the start of a new chapter. The bird arrived just before the proposal and departed soon after leaving Sam and KP with an epic story as they begin their life’s journey together.
